From a Towerless Temporary Arrangement to an Elegant Church

If we turn the cannon guarding the bastion 30 degrees to the right, we will see a church in the line of fire.
It is the Protestant town church, dating from 1839 and wisely built without a tower so as not to attract fire. A cannonball stuck in the masonry of the parish hall next to the church confirms the wisdom of this decision!

The church tower was only added in 1902. In the meantime, warfare had changed and the old city fortifications were being demolished and removed as the walls would no longer have offered any protection from the modern weaponry of the new era. It was the demolition and removal of the city walls that made the development of modern Timisoara possible.

The first Protestant service in Timisoara was held in 1795. Since the Protestant community did not have their own church, this initially took place in various municipal institutions. The United Lutheran Community was founded in 1824 at which time the decision was made to construct a church for the new community. On October 27, 1839, the solemn consecration of the Lutheran church took place.
Although the Habsburgs promoted the Catholic faith, it is remarkable that a Protestant community was already established at the end of the 18th century. It speaks to the open-mindedness of the city that as early as 1825 there was a Protestant boys’ school next to the church.
Walking along the left side, passing the church, we immediately turn left at the first opportunity.

We then continue straight ahead until we reach a rectangular square.
