Karte Brück-Haus

A Pharmacy as in the Old Days

On Cathedral Square, at the corner of Mercy Street (str. Mercy), there is another art nouveau gem: the Brück House. The building is named after its owner, Salomon Brück, who ran a butcher’s shop on the square and commissioned two of the city’s most famous architects to erect a new building in 1910-1911.

Based on a project by Lászlo Székely, under the supervision of Arnold Merbl, a masterpiece of vivid colours, diverse forms, floral ornaments, wooden fittings and ceramic decorations in the Hungarian influenced Art Nouveau style was created. The façade, which faces Cathedral Square, truly stands out due to the strong complementary colours of red and green, the lavish décor made up of various elements of folk art and handicrafts, and the original pharmacy that has been preserved.

Even before the First World War, the pharmacist Sándor/Alexander Weiss had purchased the pharmacy in the building, which had also moved into the ground floor of the newly built art nouveau palace. The words ‘Pharmacie, Apotheke, Gyógyszertar’ can be found in the stain-glassed window above the store, all in keeping with the multilingual tradition of Timisoara.

We can also still admire the more than 100-year-old cherry wood furniture, which has been preserved from the interwar period, a reminder of the history of the Weiss pharmacy.
