City of Roses
Timisoara is known for its parks and flowers. Around the Bega is a band of interconnected green areas; there is a park in the city centre on the site where the Transylvanian barracks were demolished in 1965, and a botanical garden at the northern end of the old town.
The most beautiful of all parks, however, is the Rose Garden. Originating in the 19th century, over 10,000 roses from approximately 600 species bloom between spring and autumn and exude a beguiling fragrance, which gave Timisoara the nickname "City of Roses".
