As of 1716, after Timisoara had come under the rule of the Habsburg Monarchy, the city was rebuilt from scratch modelling Viennese architecture.
The predominant architectural style was originally Baroque, which remained a bit longer in fashion in Timisoara than in the Austrian heartland. Neo-Classical style followed in 1870, later followed by Art Nouveau and Eclecticism. Many preserved monuments of this time brought Timisoara the nickname "Little Vienna".
